About this item

You sparkle from the inside out! Happy Birthday A glittering fountain of water cascades over swim star Esther Williams as she brings her dazzling act to Las Vegas. When Esther was little, it was nearly impossible to keep her away from the local pool and when she swam more than she could afford, she counted towels in exchange for admission. There, lifeguards taught Esther the butterfly stroke-at that time reserved for men. Setting regional and national records as a teen, Williams became the nation's top female swimmer and was headed to the Olympics when World War II led to its cancellation. Turning to show business, Esther Williams almost single-handedly transformed the "Aqua Musical" and ignited a passion for swimming in the U.S. Appearing in over 30 films, the "Million-Dollar Mermaid" sang, acted, water-skied and performed daring feats underwater and dives from over 100 ft high. Esther Williams was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Avanti Press America 250
