One of the most famous planes from World War II, the IL-2 was designed and mass-produced in the USSR starting in 1941. Production of subsequent versions of the Il-2 was canceled only a few years after the war. In total, about 36,000 of these aircraft were built. The initial versions struggled with many problems and were replaced in 1942-43 by Il-2 aircraft with a two-man crew, more powerful engines and reinforced armament. This model presents the original design of the wings, which was completely different than in the slightly later IL-2M3 model, in which they got a more aggressive angle of attack. In the West, the plane gained the popular name “Shturmovik.”
