The Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter was a light fighter aircraft that was developed in the 1960s by the American Northrop Corporation. It was introduced into service in 1964. The F-5A was a popular export model and gained recognition around the world. This aircraft played an important role in many armed conflicts and served as a platform for training pilots. Between 1966 and 1972, Norway purchased a total of 108 F-5 aircraft in various versions. These planes were used in the Air Force for almost 35 years, during which they underwent a number of modernization programs. 336 Squadron at Rygge Air Base was the last unit to use the F-5, and the aircraft were withdrawn from active service in 2000.
