About this item

Smithsonian Amber Dig Step into the world of prehistoric discovery with the Smithsonian Amber Dig, an immersive STEM excavation kit that lets kids uncover pieces of simulated amber containing preserved objects, similar to how scientists find real fossils trapped in hardened tree resin. Using included digging tools—a mallet, dowel and brush—young paleontologists chip away at the sand block to reveal multiple amber pieces. Once excavated, kids clean and study the finds using the magnifying glass and reference poster, learning what amber can tell us about ancient ecosystems and how preserved insects help scientists understand Earth’s history. Designed for ages 8+, this kit encourages hands-on exploration, scientific thinking and curiosity about the natural world. The finished amber collection makes an impress
